LATIN DANCE LESSONS LOUISVILLE: When we speak of "Latin Dance Lessons", we are referring to a general category of couples dance lessons which includes many dances of Latin-American origin. There are two separate categories of Latin dance lessons; "Club Style" and "Latin Ballroom". Typically, the club style of Latin dance lessons includes the dance styles you would find at a nightclub that plays Latin dance music. The other style includes the dance styles that you would find in ballroom dancing. At Derby City Ballroom, we teach all styles of Latin dance lessons. Below is a description of the different types of Latin dance lessons that we offer.

"CLUB STYLE" LATIN DANCE LESSONS: SALSA - A very energetic Latin dance. Lots of fun and is characterized by spins, sharp movements, and crisp turns. Popular in the Latin dance clubs. BACHATA - Originating in the Dominican Republic, Bachata is now danced all over the world. Bachata music is usually romantic; especially of heartbreak. MERENGUE - When introduced to the United States in 1941, it was considered scandalous buy the dance professionals of the day. Both Haiti and the Dominican Republic claim Merengue, and it contains elements of both cultures. Merengue is a fun, exciting and relatively easy dance to learn. |

"BALLROOM STYLE" LATIN DANCE LESSONS: CHA CHA - Originally called "triple Mambo" as it evolved from the Mambo. Cha Cha gets its name from its cha-cha-cha sounds that the footwork make, Cha Cha has remained the all time most popular style of Latin dance lessons. SAMBA - A street festival dance originating in Brazil which was introduced to the United States in the 1920s. Samba is fun, lively, and upbeat. RUMBA - Often referred to as the "Dance of Love", Rumba is a slow to medium tempo Latin dance characterized by sensual, provocative movements, gestures and Cuban hip motion. MAMBO - Originally a combination of Rumba and Swing, the Mambo peaked in its popularity in the 1950s and remains popular today. BOLERO - A slow Latin dance which originated as one of two forms of Rumba. It still shares many of the same figures, yet differs in its tempo and movement. |
